Jag kom ensam
By Kenny Bengtsson

Jag kom ensam is the photographer Kenny Bengtsson’s debut book and is about seeing the individual and hearing their story. For several years he has met people who came to Sweden alone without relatives as children and young people. They have fled war, persecution and poverty. The portrayed are from the Jewish children who came to Sweden after the November pogrom in 1938 to today’s teenagers who come with rubber boats across the Mediterranean. Kenny Bengtsson has photographed his interviewees with as equal conditions as possible, regardless of whether they have been in asylum accommodation or in their homes. The design makes the connections between the people clearer and asks questions about the child’s experience of being a refugee and the different causes and consequences of the refugee. Kenny Bengtsson then creates a description that extends over 70 years. There are as many stories as there are people. The viewer gets to meet 50 people who together give several pictures of what it can mean to escape as a child. Sometimes we think the story feels familiar, other times it surprises and teaches us something new.
